Teaching with Graphic Novels: From Intimidation to Immersion

Course Description: High-level non-fiction texts are often essential but can be overwhelming or inaccessible for many students. In this two-part book study, participants will explore how graphic novel adaptations can transform challenging content into an immersive and highly readable experience. Participants will engage in an "eyes-on" reading experience, reflecting on their own reading of a graphic adaptation of Timothy Snyder's On Tyranny (or similar text) to directly mirror and understand the student's journey. Participants will leave with practical strategies for using graphic non-fiction across all subjects to boost student engagement, deepen comprehension, and make complex topics accessible to every learner.
