Teaching with Graphic Novels: From Intimidation to Immersion

Course Description: High-level non-fiction texts are often essential but can be overwhelming or inaccessible for many students. In this two-part book study, participants will explore how graphic novels can transform challenging content into an immersive and highly readable experience. Participants will engage in an "eyes-on" reading experience, reflecting on their own reading of any one of the following graphic novels:

  • On Tyranny (Graphic Edition) by Timothy Snyder & Nora Krug
  • Maus I: A Survivor's Tale (My Father Bleed History) by Art Spiegelman
  • Embroideries by Marjane Satrapi
  • Persepolis 1: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi
to directly mirror and understand the student's journey. Participants will leave with practical strategies for using graphic non-fiction across all subjects to boost student engagement, deepen comprehension, and make complex topics accessible to every learner.

Facilitator: Dr. Gina L. Gullo, EdD, Med
