Fostering a “Growth Mindset” in the Classroom Today: Shifting the Focus to Growth and Development with Assessment and Grades Rather than Measurement for Sorting and Classification

Wednesday, March 12, 2025 from 7:00-8:30 PM.

Presenter: Dr. Chris M. Clayton Sr., NBCT, Ph.D.

Course Description:  This session features the research and work of Dr. Carol Dweck and author Mary Cay Ricci’s book entitled “Mindsets in the Classroom,” along with examples from Dr. Clayton’s own practice and a multitude of other experts in the field as it explores the importance of cultivating a “Growth Mindset” so foundational to effective learning, growth, and development. Participants will explore specific strategies for changing the paradigm of assessment and grading from one that is focused on measurement in order to sort and classify students (which reinforces “fixed” mindset thinking) to one that focuses on growth and development which reinforces learners having a “growth” mindset about learning. Participants will emerge from the session with an understanding of “growth” versus “fixed” mindsets and be armed with knowledge, skills, and resources to effectively implement productive “growth mindsets” in their classrooms in order to cultivate and foster consistent student growth, persistence, and intrinsic motivation for learning in their classrooms.
